About the Workshop:

In this 3 day banjo workshop we will cover:

  • Creating your own solos and breaks based on the melody (instead of just playing licks over the chords)
  • Jam Session Survival (Helpful ways to fake it when playing songs you don’t know)
  • Back-up and Fills: Everything from basic vamping to rolling backup to fancy backup licks
  • Technique, Technique, Technique! (How to sound better playing what you already know)
  • Playing in keys other than G (cool stuff for playing in C, D, E, F, and even Bb! without a capo!)

We will also cover topics suggested by the class, so have your suggestions ready. We can take on:

  • Scruggs, Melodic and Single String styles (and how to combine them)
  • Banjo set-up and maintenance
  • Singing while playing the banjo and more.

This workshop will be geared toward the intermediate to advanced player. Beginners are welcome, but students should be able to play along with bluegrass standards at least at moderate speed, be able to comfortably change chords on a 3 or 4 chord song, know the basics of Scruggs style banjo. Some TABs will be provided and video and audio recording will be allowed for certain segments.

Your workshop fee includes full admission to the Fall Jam which includes workshops, main stage performances, Jams, Draw Bands, Ukulele, Old-Time and Bluegrass music. Fireside Live (Open Stage)  and so much more! If you wish to stay at the Crowne Plaza, we have a special room rate of $107 (plus tax) per night. Be sure to ask for the Bluegrass rate when you book! Crowne Plaza's phone number is: (763) 559-6600
